These first set of questions will cover certain points that Pastor Ed wants to highlight in the first three chapters of Romans by way of an overview of some of the things we have covered so far in this series.
- Paul explains his gospel in the letter to the Roman Christians. What glorious truth is revealed in the gospel message that Paul preached? How would you define this phrase? Have you personally been anticipating Paul’s explanation that is coming in the next paragraph of chapter three (3:21-26)?
- We took our time to carefully consider Paul’s presentation of the bad news, and why the world is in desperate need of the good news. What spoke to you in these chapters that covered the ungodliness and unrighteousness of the Gentile and Jewish world of Paul’s day? Can you describe the difference between how Paul convicted the Gentiles of sin versus how he dealt with his fellow Jews?
- Can you recall the principles of God’s judgment that are iterated by Paul in the second chapter (2:1-16)? In view of these principles by which God will judge humanity, it’s clear that no one will “stand in the judgment” (Psa.1:5), i.e. survive the divine trial. How do you think the bad news of the future judgment will be answered in Paul’s presentation of the good news?
- After realizing the profound nature of the human condition and God’s response to it (1:18-3:20), how does this impact our personal evangelism? Is it reasonable to think that we need to go to the same depth that Paul does or we are not evangelizing correctly? What would you say differently? Does Paul’s comprehensive analysis of mankind’s sinful and lost condition change how you see others?
- How would you answer the question: Are the heathen really lost? Does this question bother you? Why or why not? Do we wrestle with our own inconsistency in what we profess to believe and what we do? What has caused you to pause and rethink your previous beliefs in light of Paul’s teaching in these opening chapters?
