Tonight’s Discussion Topic: The Conversion of Saul – Acts 9:1-9
Tonight’s Discussion Questions:
1. Spend sometime talking about Saul’s background, beliefs, and zeal prior to meeting Jesus on the Damascus road. Where was he born and educated? What indicates his status and influence even as a young man? What did Saul believe was required of a person in order to be acceptable to God? What explains his extreme zeal? How did he view this new movement that was rapidly spreading and gaining more and more followers?
2. Luke describes the early Christian movement as “the way” six times in Acts. What implications for doctrine, practice, and experience are set forth in this title for Christianity?
3. Review Luke’s account of Saul’s encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ as he approached Damascus. What did Saul see and hear? How could a light at midday be so bright as to blind him? What was the nature of this light? Did it shine for awhile or was it a flash? What does that tell you about the visible revelation of Christ at his second coming? How shocked was Saul to learn who the divine personage was that spoke to him? What traumatizing realizations dawned on him at that moment? How did he deal with the impact of the experience? What utterly amazed him about his encounter with Jesus?
4. Why is Saul’s conversion a testimony to the truth of Christianity? Did anyone look up George Lyttleton and Gilbert West to learn more about their apologetic writings in defense of Paul’s conversion and Christ’s resurrection?
